The Govt. of India recognizes about 18 organic certification agencies at present. As organic certification is expensive for small and marginal farmers, the Participatory Guarantee Scheme is a viable alternative for them. Under this scheme a group of farmers monitor each other and receive organic certification from the PGS Council of India at the end of the stipulated period. Since no inspector from outside is brought in, the high fees associated with organic certification are not there. |
|
A few certification agencies charge fees on a sliding scale depending upon the previous land usage, the size of the holding and a few other parameters. |
